Providing Your Loved One With Assisted Living Services

December 2nd, 2011 by admin

Deciding to place your loved one in an assisted living facility can be a difficult and painful decision. We instinctively believe that our loved ones are best off living independently. Unfortunately independent living isn’t always an option. If you’re worried about the health, safety and security of your loved one, you should put serious consideration into assisted living.

But before you choose a facility, it’s important to understand the differences between nursing homes and assisted living facilities. Nursing homes by nature are there to provide continuous around the clock care to those people who are incapable of doing things for themselves.

An assisted living facility offers a different approach. Assisted living centers are designed to offer support and care for those people who require some assistance but are not in need of 24 hour medical support. Assisted living centers help with housekeeping, meals, laundry and other services that might be too difficult for a resident to maintain on their own. The goal is to help residents to lead happy, healthy, and safe lives.

Another major difference between an assisted living center and a nursing home is that assisted living facilities usually offer private and semi-private living accommodations. Residents are not kept in close confinement and monitored around the clock. Privacy, respect, and dignity are all characteristics of a good assisted living facility.

But not all assisted living facilities are created equal. The level of care of and accommodations varies greatly from one assisted living facility to another. As a result it’s important to carefully review each facility you are considering for your loved one before checking them into an assisted living center.

One area that can be of considerable importance is the level of medical attention the assisted living facility provides. Unlike nursing homes, assisted living facilities are not required to provide round-the-clock medical care. In fact, some assisted living centers offer very limited medical support at all, instead leaving this area completely in the hands of the family.

Another area that you’ll want to examine before placing your loved one into an assisted living facility is the level of amenities the facility offers. Luxury assisted living facilities offer a broader range of amenities than do budget restrictive ones. Some of the best assisted living centers house a variety of entertainment options for their residents from built in movie theaters to swimming pools, meditation gardens, and gaming parlors among a variety of other amenities. Gourmet meals and country club memberships are even offered at some prestigious luxury assisted living centers.

The decision to place a loved one into assisted living care is never an easy one but with a little research and a lot of love you can be sure to provide your loved one with a dignified, safe, and enjoyable living environment. But before you make a decision find out what the various luxury assisted living centers in your area have to offer. You might be pleasantly surprised at just how positive an experience assisted living can be.
